Double Counter. A discord bot to NOT use

You may have know a Discord bot called Double Counter#8519. This bot is apperently a discord bot to detect alts from joining your server. This seems like a good idea, however with this bot and how it works, things go really bad. In this blog, I will explain how bad this bot is and I will list alternative verification bots that will do a better job with verification. So, if you look at the bot's about me, it reads: "Double Counter is the best alt account and raid blocker on Discord. We provide instant verification based on IP, cookies and much more. Double Counter is your best all-in-one security bot." When the bot says it is based on IP, this becomes a BIG RED FLAG for 2 big reasons.

One reason using IP addresses is a big red flag for server verification is that this could affect people who have like siblings or people who live in the same household as you. Obviously if you have multiple people living in the same household, you would be sharing the WIFI which would put your entire household on the same IP address. Also, if you were to delete your old discord account and sign up again with a new Discord account, it would be impossible to verify into servers that uses this bot because your new account would be linked to the same IP address as your old account.

Another reason using IP addresses for server verification is that IP addresses are personal and sensitive information. IP addresses can show what city you live in. If people know your IP address, they could also use this to dox you or DDoS you. Its not only is a bad idea for verification, it can be dangerous and will lose trust in your members for getting IP grabbed.

I also do want to mention that having Alt accounts is not as bad as self bots or raiders. Double Counter will most likely NOT stop any raids because raids can be done by multiple people. Honestly, you should worry about Selfbots and Raiders way more and Double counter will mostly likely not stop that. This definitly proves my point even furthur that using Double Counter will most likely have your members angery at you for being IP grabbed.

In Conclusion, Do not use Double Counter. You will most likely lose trust with your members before this bot's website will grab your IP. Now I will show you a couple alternative verification bots that I found that you will be WAY better off with instead of some IP grabbing bot.

Final note: No bot will EVER ask you to scan a QR code with the Discord mobile app to verify, if a bot asks you to scan a QR code with the discord app, report it to Discord. Fake bots are being created to steal people's discord accounts. So DO NOT SCAN ANY QR CODES. Most bots I am showing are Verified bots.

Alternative 1: AltDentifier

AltDentifier is a discord bot that verifies your members based on members social media connections and it advertises to have an Anti-Raid system. This bot is also in over 125,000 servers as of November 2022. Website: https://altdentifier.com/

Pros (4): They have Anti-raid. Verifies with social media accounts instead of IP. Avaliable in English, Dutch, French, German and Spanish. Easy to setup with the Web panel.

Cons (1): Members could potientally bypass the Anti-Alt system by using new Social media accounts.

Alternative 2: Wick

Wick bot is a discord bot that is meant to stop Raids. Wickbot also has a Join gate where you can make members do a captcha before they gain access to the server. Trusted in over 330k servers as of November 1st, 2022 which is more than Double Counter's server count. Website: https://wickbot.com/

Pros (3): Trusted in over 325k servers (As of November 2022). Ability to set a Captcha Join gate. Ability to lockdown the server quickly with the bot,

Cons (2): Panic Mode is behind premium ($5 a month). May be difficult to set up.

Alternative 3: Captcha Bot

Captcha bot is a discord bot that makes your members do a Captcha when they join your server to avoid Spam/user Botting. This bot can also detect phishing websites as well. Website: https://captcha.bot/

Pros (3): Ability to detect Phishing links. Prevent Spam/User bots from Entering your server with a Captcha. Detect and flag suspicious accounts.

Cons (2): Advertises about NFTs. Web verification only for Free plan.

Alternative 4: Reaction role Bots

This does not apply to one specific bot, this apply to any bot that uses Reaction roles system like Dyno or Carl bot. You can use Reaction roles system as a join gate. Website: https://dyno.gg/ and https://carl.gg/ (depends on reaction role bot you get

Pros (2): Easy to setup (well, at least it depends on the Reaction roles bot you use), Verification is pretty simple.

Cons (2): Some bots may be harder to setup with. Adding reactions can be botted
